Coming up

Over the next few months, we’re looking forward to introducing international networking and some more focused, technical sessions. Both of these innovations have been introduced in response to member feedback – so do tell us if there’s anything new you’d like us to try.

We are also launching a brand new virtual event series called Horizons. These exclusive debates for Utility Week members in which we discuss macro issues and how they could ultimately impact on the utilities sector. We will hear from experts around the chosen topic before opening up to members for discussion. The first event will centre around the political landscape and in particular what a Labour government would mean for utilities, featuring contributions from Guy Newey, chief executive of Energy Systems Catapult and Tone Langengen, of the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change.

The digital weekly will feature interviews with the chief executives of Eon and Electricity North West among others as well as snap analysis of the week’s news.

We will also be launching a series of articles looking ahead to the creation of the future system operator and what needs to happen to get us there. We will continue our deep dive series into the PR24 business plans in water and will also be exploring the scale of the challenge in eradicating lead from drinking water.

Utility Week Live is returning to Birmingham’s NEC, May 21-22 2024, with a host of new zones and features designed to unite stakeholders in the transition to a digitally enabled, net zero future, under the new strapline ‘Accelerate Delivery’.

As the UK’s energy and water industries work to deliver their 2030 carbon reduction targets, including a commitment for the water industry to reach net zero and the widespread adoption of low carbon technologies, there has never been a greater demand for the rollout of new infrastructure, or for innovative solutions.

In response, we’re introducing new features including the Local Government Pavilion, showcasing decarbonisation plans from local authorities in association with SSE Networks; the Energy Flexibility stage, hosting two days of content dedicated to the emerging market; and the RoboTech Demo Zone providing live demonstrations of the latest artificial intelligence, automation and robotics revolutionising utilities.

Once again, we’ll be offering a host of exclusive benefits to Utility Week members. From first sight of the content programme through to our exclusive members’ lounge with complimentary refreshments onsite, we’re here to help you get the most out of the industry’s biggest and best event.

We’ll be in touch soon to tell you more about our plans, and ask how we can help you navigate the action-packed content programme, running across six stages; as well as the invite-only networking events.

Autumn 2023

Over the past quarter, our new virtual networking events have gained a dedicated following. Our focus on communications teams explored how utilities can best engage the public around live incidents, as well as strategies for handling an evolving local media environment. Our gathering of HR professionals discussed driving diversity and how to tackle unconscious bias. Meanwhile in our procurement focus we looked at the role of frameworks and asked whether they are a threat to innovation. In the quarter ahead, we’ll be experimenting with some new topics and approaches – more below.

The membership team was out in force at our conferences, where members enjoy priority booking and an exclusive member’s rate, as well as special member’s briefings onsite. At Drinking Water Quality, we discussed the role of drinking water quality in rebuilding consumer trust; the need for targeted support for vulnerable customers this winter and whether resilience is getting enough focus in PR24.

Our new weekly digital edition is building a loyal following. Deploying the latest interactive web technology, it delivers the magazine experience in a new, online format and this quarter, has included features on everything from forever chemicals to hydrogen for nuclear, via fuel poverty and energy flexibility. We also conducted interviews with Octopus Energy CEO Greg Jackson, electricity networks commissioner Nick Winser, SGN boss Mark Wild and National Grid Electricity Distribution president Cordi O’Hara.
